Chumbley won't run for re-election

Associated Press

State Sen. Avery Chumbley announced yesterday that he won't seek a third term.

Chumbley, president of Wailuku Agribusiness, said the liquidation of parent company C. Brewer & Co. Ltd. is demanding more of his time.

"At this point, I can't do both," said Chumbley, D-6th (E. Maui, N. Kaua'i). "And it's not fair to the constituents that I don't devote 100 percent attention and effort to them."

Under reapportionment, the new Senate seat will represent South and West Maui.

C. Brewer put all of its 70,000 acres on the market in January as part of a liquidation authorized by shareholders in 2001. Wailuku Agribusiness owns about 20,000 acres on Maui.

Before being elected to the Senate, Chumbley served one term in the state House.

Chumbley, 47, didn't rule out the possibility of running for elective office in the future.

"Once my commitments to C. Brewer are concluded, I'll be open to exploring other opportunities to be of service to the people of Maui County and the state of Hawai'i," he said.
