The American Society of Safety Engineers has announced the winners of its 2002 Excellence in Safety Awards, which recognize businesses for efforts in promoting occupational safety. They are:

• Small Business (fewer than 50 employees): first place, C & S Services Inc., a ship repair company; second place, Alstom Power, operators of a cogeneration energy plant for Kalaeloa Partners LLC in Campbell Industrial Park.

• Medium-sized business (51-125 employees): first place, Weyerhaeuser, a forest and paper products company; second place, contractor Nordic Construction.

• Large business (more than 125 employees): first place, contractor Dick Pacific.

• Honorable Mention: City Mill and Covanta Honolulu Resource Recovery Venture, operators of the City and County of Honolulu's waste-to-energy facility, H-Power.

• Individual awards went to the late George Grey, former safety director of Maui Electric Co. for Personnel Contributions for improving the health and safety profession in Hawai'i; George Mauliola, safety manager, Gaspro, for outstanding dedication to the safety profession in Hawai'i; and Ken Hirai, retired, trainer, consultant/facilitator, Hawai'i Occupational Safety and Health Division, Program Management Section, lifetime achievement in health and safety.

The Environmental Council has named its state and county agency award winners for 2002. They are:

State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism for promoting renewable energy use.

County of Maui Department of Public Works and Waste Management for requiring mandatory recycling of glass for establishments that possess liquor licenses and using recycled glass in county projects.

State Department of Agriculture for inspecting all incoming shipments of plants, nondomestic animals and micro-organisms to prevent the entry of harmful pests and diseases.

City and County of Honolulu Board of Water Supply for expanding community-based watershed planning to every ahupua'a of O'ahu.

County of Hawai'i Fire Department for purchasing hazardous materials response equipment and training personnel to properly handle hazardous situations.

• The Hawai'i Council for the Humanities has presented its sixth annual Outstanding Teaching Awards to Sarah Fincke of Kalaheo High School and Helen Kobayashi of Waiakea High School for their longtime support of the council's Hawai'i History Day program and for their role in getting students to "do history" and learn "history's habits of the mind."

Both teachers are active in Hawai'i History Day and have coordinated the participation of their schools.

• The 2002 Posters for Peace Contest co-sponsored by The Mediation Center of the Pacific and the Association of Conflict Resolution has recognized the following winning students:

• Fifth and sixth grade — Jill Springer, Keolu Elementary, first place; Ellen Leung, 'Aina Haina Elementary, second place; Riki Omokawa, 'Aina Haina Elementary, third place.

• Third and fourth grade — Cathlyn Rosete, Kalihi-Waena Elementary, first place; Jerika Limos, Holomua Elementary, second place; Kapulani Entendencia, Uka Elementary, third place.
