Nevada hands UH a record 35th loss

Advertiser Staff

Mike Hass hit two home runs and drove in eight to lead Nevada over Hawai'i, 14-10, yesterday in Western Athletic Conference baseball at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev.

Hass had a two-run single and a pair of three-run homers to help the Wolf Pack (23-29, 8-17 WAC) send the Rainbows (16-35, 5-20) to their third consecutive loss and a school history worst 35 losses.

The usually effective Chris George (6-5) didn't last long, allowing nine runs on six hits, two walks and a school record five hit batsmen in 3¡ innings for UH. He hit three batters in one inning, tying a school record. He entered yesterday's game having hit seven in 80á innings.

Mateo Miramontes (6-7) gave up more runs (10, nine earned) than George, but had the backing by his offense, which pounded out 17 hits.

The Rainbows owned a 1-0 lead after one on Brent Cook's first home run of the season.

But the Wolf Pack sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run second when George hit three batters. Mike Gillies and Hass each had two-run singles in the inning.

Nevada added three more in the fourth to increase their lead to 9-1 before the Rainbows marched 10 batters to the plate in a seven-run fifth. A two-run single by Scooter Martines and a three-run home run by Derek Honma, also his first of the season, helped UH pull to within one.

But reliever Sean Yamashita was hit for four runs in the fifth. The big blow was Hass' second three-run homer of the game to put Nevada head 13-8.

Hawai'i chipped away with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, only to see Nevada add one in the bottom of the seventh.

The Rainbows tried to mount threats in the next two innings. In the eighth, they started with consecutive singles by Lane Nogawa and Cook, but reliever Bryan Johnson retired the next three batters.

In the ninth, Kevin Gilbride led off with a single, but was forced at second on Julian Russell's grounder. Bryan Bock flied out to center and Russell was caught going back to first for a game-ending double play.

Hawai'i was without first baseman Gregg Omori, who suffered a biceps pull during Friday's workout.
