Kono takes 1-shot lead at Jennie K.

Punahou sixth-grader Stephanie Kono surged ahead in yesterday's second round of the Jennie K. Wilson Invitational at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Kono, who shot 3-over-par 75 in the first round, followed with a 76. Her 151 total is a shot ahead of Hilo High School's Kira-Ann Murashige and two ahead of state high school champion Leah Whiting and Ayumi Hori. Murashige and Whiting, a Waiakea senior, shot 77 yesterday while Moanalua's Hori had the day's best round, 75.

First-round leader Desiree Ting (81-155) is alone in fifth.

The leaders go out at approximately 9 this morning.

More qualify: Joan Shimozaki of Kihei, Maui, shot a 2-over-par 74 at The Bay Course, Kapalua, Maui, to win low medalist honors yesterday at a sectional qualifying tournament for the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.

The championship is June 18-23 at The Meadows Course of the Sun River (Ore.) Resort.

Alternates were Jayna Shimomura (86), Kelli Nakano (87) and Kelly Nakashima (87).

At the sectional at Lihue, Kaua'i, Merynn Ito (74) of 'Aiea, Kayla Morinaga (75), Whitney Ueno of Hilo and Lisa Kajihara of Makawao, Maui, qualified at the par-74 Grove Farm Golf Course at Puakea. Scores for Ueno and Kajiwara were not reported.

Alternates were Shelcie Takenouchi, Kimberly Kim, Miki Ueoka and Sharron Weber.

Last week, Michelle Wie, who played in an LPGA tournament this week in North Augusta, S.C., Kira-Ann Murashige of Hilo, Amanda Wilson of Hilo and Heidi Chua of the Philippines qualified at Ala Wai Golf Course on O'ahu.

QUARTERBACK CLUB

Shoji and sailing: University of Hawai'i coaches Dave Shoji (women's volleyball) and Andrew Johnson (sailing) are scheduled to speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The club's luncheon is at 11:30 a.m., and meeting at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Also speaking are Joe Siofele, a former St. Louis School football standout now at the University of Arizona, and Mike Nelson and Richard Young, producers of Hawai'i Boat Show and Ocean Expo.
