Body discovered off Round Top

Homicide detectives were called today to investigate the discovery of a body shortly before 8 a.m. in the bushes off Round Top Drive.

No further information on the individual was available this morning, but police helicopters were dispatched to recover the body.

Police closed the road on either side of the scene, between Forest Ridge Way and 4265 Round Top Drive, during the investigation.

Searchers spot Hau'ula hikers

Two women who did not return yesterday from a hike above Hau'ula were spotted today by Honolulu Fire Department air crews, and rescuers were mobilizing this morning to bring them back to safety.

The women, who appeared to be unharmed, were reported missing last night, and fire rescuers began the search about 10 p.m. on Hau'ula Loop and Papali trails, said fire Capt. Richard Soo. They were found about 9:30 a.m.

Coast Guard still searching for man

The Coast Guard resumed its search today for a man believed to have fallen overboard in the Kaua'i Channel.

Mark Brewer, 47, was reported missing Saturday by family members on Kaua'i, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Lauren Smith. Brewer had set out alone Friday from Nawiliwili in the Lihu'e district, headed toward O'ahu. When he failed to check in Saturday the family became concerned.

A Coast Guard C-130 aircraft found his 22-foot catamaran yesterday. The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Kittiwake boarded the vessel last night and found the throttle engaged, Smith said, which suggests Brewer's craft had been swamped unexpectedly.

Plans were made to tow the boat ashore and a search for the man began in the Kaua'i Channel. The search was called off at 8 p.m. and resumed today, with Navy and Honolulu Fire Department aircraft assisting a Coast Guard C-130, two Cessnas and H65 helicopter. The cutter Washington was set to relieve the Kittiwake today, Smith said, and the guard also dispatched an 87-foot patrol boat to search the waters off Wai'anae.

"There is a good chance he is alive," said Coast Guard Lt. Jeff Dolan. "His family said he is an experienced waterman. He may have just been bounced out of the boat by a swell."
