Two fires strike leeward O'ahu
A Makaha family was homeless and a firefighter slightly injured yesterday as firefighters battled two fires on the leeward side of O'ahu.
The Makaha house fire, at 84-296A Ikuone Place, was started by an unattended cooking pot left on the stove shortly before 11 a.m., said Fire Capt. Richard Soo.
A 43-year-old tenant was at home at the time, along with her visiting 21-year-old daughter and 3-year-old granddaughter. All escaped the fire without injury.
The family's parrot, which lived in a cage in the kitchen, was killed in the fire.
The Red Cross was called to the house last night to help the 43-year-old woman, her 38-year-old husband and their 16-year-old daughter find other lodging.
The fire caused $130,000 damage.
Another fire, in 'Ewa Beach, flared up in a storage shed outside a townhouse at 91-651 Ku'ilioloa Place about an hour before the Makaha fire. The shed fire caused $1,000 in damage and was quickly brought under control, but a firefighter was taken to St. Francis Medical Center West for treatment of a cut to his right hand.
Two men rescued near Ka'ena Point
Firefighters and lifeguards worked yesterday to rescue two men adrift in a small sailboat near Ka'ena Point yesterday.
HFD Capt. Richard Soo said the two men launched the boat from Hale'iwa but had trouble with their sail and drifted out to the point shortly before 10 a.m.
The Air 1 helicopter kept the boat in sight while firefighters and lifeguards launched boats and jet skis.
Firefighters towed the boat into Yokohama Bay while lifeguards brought in one of the men and some of their equipment on a jet ski.
In related news, Rod Alderton, a dispatcher for the city's Ocean Safety, said lifeguards also assisted four swimmers yesterday in trouble off Ala Moana Beach Park, two off Sandy Beach, two near Makapu'u and four off Ma'ili Beach Park.
