Tournament will be July 4-7 in Kansas

Christel Tomori, Su A. Kim, Amanda Wilson, Desiree Ting and Stephanie Kono qualified for the 2002 U.S. Women's Open Championship yesterday at Waialae Country Club.

Tomori, from Hilo, led with a 72. Kim shot a 75, Wilson 76, and Ting and Kono 77.

The U.S. Women's Open will be played July 4-7 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

FOOTBALL

• Moenoa to attend leadership conference: University of Hawai'i football player Uriah Moenoa has been invited to participate in the sixth NCAA foundation Leadership Conference.

Moenoa, a starting right tackle from Iolani School, leaves Saturday for the week-long conference at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and the Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Moenoa was among 282 NCAA student-athletes selected from 1,183 nominees. Moenoa, a psychology major, wrote an essay on his life. He was the only UH student-athlete selected.

"I was surprised," Moenoa said of the invitation. "I thought it was a joke. I'm still kind of shocked."

Mike Cavanaugh, who coaches the UH offensive linemen, said: "I think it's a great opportunity. He could be a great leader if he wanted."

YACHTING

• Waikiki Yacht Club defends title: The Waikiki Yacht Club successfully defended the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup, a two-day Olympic triangles course regatta off Waikiki Sunday.

The Waikiki Yacht Club entered a J-35 (Ho'okipa) skippered by Mike Rothwell. Kane'ohe Yacht Club's entry Kaimiloa III, a J-44 skippered by Dave Nottage, took second. Placing third was the Hawai'i Yacht Club entry Boomerang, a Sydney 41 skippered by John Spadaro.

BASKETBALL

• Filipino-American tournament: The AIG-Hawai'i Fil-Am Jam Basketball Invitational is bringing together several Filipino-American basketball teams from Hawai'i, California and Washington for a two-day event scheduled for May 25-26.

The 16-team invitational will take place at Moanalua High School, Halawa District Park and Waipahu District Park.
