Actor James Earl Jones made an appearance at The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu yesterday, handing out gifts to new mothers at the maternity ward and presenting a $25,000 check to Read To Me International, a nonprofit organization incorporated in Hawai'i.

The grant will be used to launch Read To Me International's Books for Babies program, designed to educate new mothers about the importance of reading to their babies from the time they are born.

The grant was financed by Verizon, for which Jones is a national spokesman.
