Limited pig hunting now allowed at park

 •  Wa'ahila Park water fountains remain off

Hikers headed up the Wa'ahila Ridge Trail may have noticed signs placed on the adjoining Kolowalu Trail, which leads to Manoa Valley, indicating the area is now open to pig hunting.

State Parks Administrator Dan Quinn said that because of the recent damage caused by feral pigs to the trail system and surrounding forest areas, a special hunting season was opened from April 2 to June 27 but limited to permit only.

Use of dogs and knives is allowed in pig hunts on the trail. Hunting is allowed between sunrise and 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Hunting in the area is normally off limits because of wide-scale public use, Quinn said.

"Any area with potential multiple user groups, it would be only non-firearm hunting," Quinn said. "The Pali Highway area is just bow and arrow. They have to get a lot closer and the chances of anyone in the area being in the wrong spot at the wrong time is a lot less."

Hikers are allowed on the trail during hunt times, but are advised to leave pet dogs at home during hunting hours.
