Sixth Pre-Plus school planned

Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate School will become the sixth location for a public-private preschool in the state's Pre-Plus program. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. today at the campus.

The Honolulu Community Action Program's Headstart will be the private provider for the Pre-Plus preschool when it opens in August.

The Legislature provided $5 million to build 26 Pre-Plus preschool facilities on public school sites over two years. The first 13 schools are expected to be operating by December, and the next 13 should open in 2003.

Pre-Plus will accept 3- and 4-year-olds from low-income families to help prepare them for kindergarten. Although families of all income levels can apply to the Pre-Plus schools, preference will be given to children whose families are at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Index, which is $18,100 for a family of four.
