Amatour kicks off second tournament

Advertiser Staff

Amatour Hawai'i will tee up its second tournament this weekend at the Aloha Shoyu Hawai'i Prince Championship. The tournament will be played on Prince's B and C courses.

Grant Imamura won the Luana Hills Inaugural last month. Mark West was second. Paul Kimura, Troy Frazier, San Hyun Park, Gary Kong and Sid Fernandez tied for third.

Players tee off from 11:30 a.m. Saturday, off tees Nos. 1 and 10.

Amatour, open to male amateurs 15 and older, has seven events scheduled its first year. Qualifying gave 60 players exempt status. There are six 36-hole tournaments, all offering $1,800 in merchandise prizes.

The series concludes in December with the New 'Ewa Beach Final Showdown.

• All-Star get-together: Hawai'i's top high school golfers will play in the second Hawai'i All-Star Invitational, Sunday and Monday at Olomana Golf Links.

Play begins at 11 a.m. the first day, and 10 a.m. Monday.

The tournament recognizes the top players from the five Hawai'i leagues. Six players (four boys, two girls) represent each league in the 36-hole competition. The top three boys' scores and top girl's score count each day.

Players are invited based on stroke average for this past high school season.

In the first All-Star Invitational two years ago, Kaua'i's Rachel Kyono opened with a women's course-record 65 to win the girls championship. Ryan Masuda beat Iolani's Matthew Ma by two shots for the boys title. The Big Island won the team title.

• Junior PGA: Entries are still being accepted for the 2002 Aloha Section Westfield Junior PGA Championship.

The sectional tournament for golfers 12-under will be June 18-19 at Naniloa Country Club in Hilo. Golfers 13-17 play at Ho-nolulu Country Club June 17-18.

Winners of the older boys' and girls' divisions qualify for the national event, July 17-20 at Westfield Group Country Club in Ohio. They receive free transportation, meals and lodging.

Entry forms can be obtained from local junior golf associations and the Aloha Section PGA (593-2230).

• Junior girls: Local qualifying for the 54th U.S. Girls Junior Championship will be June 27, at Ko Olina Golf Club. Entry deadline is June 5.

Participants can download the entry form from the U.S. Golf Association Web site (usga.org). For more information, call 245-8756 on Kaua'i or e-mail gfgolf@aloha.net.

The national championship is July 22-27 at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, N.J.

• Yoga and golf: Kiyoko Sieradzki, the LPGA teaching professional at Aloha Academy of Golf at Ko'olau, will teach a Yo-Golf series in July.

The classes combine yoga and golf and are designed to condition, sharpen mental focus, relax and enhance enjoyment. Using yoga poses and techniques, golfers can increase flexibility, balance and strength.

Classes are open to women and men. They are scheduled every Sunday in July, from 4:30 p.m.-6 p.m., at Ko'olau Golf Club. Cost is $15 per session or $48 for the series. Call 780-7522 to register or for more information.

• Survey input: Golfers can contribute their opinions for the inaugural Zagat Survey golf course guide, which will include 1,800 public layouts.

Zagat is known for its consumer-based surveys of restaurants, hotels, nightlife and shopping. The golf guide will cover courses in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands.

Surveying will be conducted exclusively on the Internet (zagat.com/surveys) through June 23. The survey asks for ratings in four areas — course, service, facilities and value.

All participants will receive a free copy of the guidebook. It is scheduled to be published in November.
