MAXINE HUGHES, 85, a Big Island radio and newspaper figure for nearly a half-century, died Wednesday at her son's home in Waimea where she was recovering from an illness. Hughes is survived by daughter, Margaret Woods of Colorado, sons, Jack Jr., a schoolteacher and former Hilo radio personality now living in Washington state, and banking executive Harold Hughes of West Hawai'i; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were pending yesterday at Borthwick Hawaii Mortuary in Hilo.

HERBERT KALAWAIA AH NEE JR., 59, died may 8, 2002. Born in Honolulu. Survived by children, Herbert III, Adrian, Doug, Dwayne and Jaime; sisters, Lorraine Phillip and Gwen Martin; 11 grandchildren. Ashes to be scattered at sea. Celebration of life pending. Arrangements by Moanalua Mortuary.

DAVID SIMEON SANTA ANA, 37, of 'Eleele, Kaua'i, died May 21, 2002. Born in Hawai'i. A meat cutter for Big Save, Inc.
