Sixteen student-athletes honored

Sixteen Hawai'i high school seniors have been named outstanding scholar-athletes by the Hawai'i chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

One player, Alberto Gilroy of Radford, received a $1,000 scholarship.

Each honoree was outstanding as a player and team leader (40 percent of selection criteria), achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average (40 percent), and made contributions to the community through church, community or similar volunteer service (20 percent), said Mark Zeug of the Football Foundation.

The players from O'ahu, Maui and the Big Island were recognized at a banquet at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on May 19.

The other 15 scholar-athletes:
