KAPALUA, Maui — Mace Windu landed on Maui wielding not his light saber but the shaft of a golf club.

"Attack of the Clones" star Samuel L. Jackson putts on the third green at Kapalua Plantation Course on Maui.

And that's a fact, not fiction.

Actor Samuel L. Jackson, who plays the Jedi master in "Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones,'' was working the links yesterday at the Kapalua Plantation Course as part of a brief golfing vacation, his first visit to Hawai'i.

Jackson, also the star of "Pulp Fiction" and the remake of "Shaft," among other blockbusters, is a self-professed golf-aholic who plays host to his own celebrity golf tournament, practices on his own putting green at home and plays just about every day.

On Thursday, his first day on Maui, Jackson played the Wailea Blue Course, returning the next day to play 36 holes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. All told, the actor will have played 70 holes of golf before he leaves the Valley Isle today.

Accompanied on Maui by officials of ESPN, Jackson is scheduled to be host of the network's 2002 Espy Awards July 10 in Los Angeles.

Right now, the prolific Jackson is between screen projects. But two more movies are scheduled for release this summer, "XXX" and "Formula 51," both action/adventures.

His impression of Maui?

"Very peaceful," he said. "The people have been very kind. It's great."
