The following awards were presented to participants at Hawai'i State History Day 2002 at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa. This year's theme was "Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History."

Junior Division

• Displays: First place, Kalyn Matsuda and Markee Nobriga, Kahuku Intermediate, for "Greensboro Sit-Ins"; second place, Jenna Williams and Keli-Grace Saniatan of Kahuku Intermediate for "John Brown, Success or Failure?"; and third place, Kristy-Lei Juan, Waipahu Intermediate, for "World War II: A Fashion Reaction."

• Historical Research Essay: First place, Taylor Porter, Kahuku Intermediate, for "Title IX: The Women's Sports Revolution Begins"; second place, Jason Bilog, Lahaina Intermediate, for "Labor Rights in Hawai'i"; and third place, Hoku Ching, Kahuku Intermediate, for "The Voice of One."

• Documentary Media: First place, Devin Elting, LeJardin Academy, for "Clara Barton: Life of a Social Revolutionary"; second place, Jennifer Zheng, Aimi Mizutani and Natasha Ludwig, Waiakea Intermediate, for "Henry Ford's Revolution on Wheels"; third place, Dewey Mark and Angela Yoza, 'Aiea Intermediate, for "Amelia Earhart: Piloting Women Toward Equality."

• Performance: First place, Noelle Spring, Jackie Lautaha and Lilika Fonua, Kahuku Intermediate, for "The Reaction from the Non-Jews in Holland and Denmark to the Holocaust"; second place, Lucie Wilson, Kahuku Intermediate, for "Tahiti, The Pillage of Paradise"; third place, Monique Albano, Sara-Malia Scott and Robert Tamayo, Waipahu Intermediate, for "America and Its Reactions: The Vietnam War Through the Eyes of the People at Home."

Senior Division

• Displays: First place, Jhonavie Ganir and Roniza Gonsalvez, Maui High, for "The Montgomery G.I. Bill: Paving the Way Toward Higher Education"; second place, Whitney Nekoba, Waiakea High, for "Educate, Organize and Confront! Save Our Surf Protects Hawai'i's Shorelines"; third place, Breton Frazer and Breezy Burgoon, Kalaheo High, for "A Fable Tomorrow."

• Historical Research Essay: First place, Brennan Takayama, Waiakea High School, for "Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District: Revolutionizing the Voice of Students"; second place, Blake Kurisu, Waiakea High, "The Revolutionary Sugar Strike of 1946: Political Reaction and Reform"; third place, Sara Nonaka, Waimea High, for "Curt Flood's Legacy to Baseball."

• Documentary Media: First place, J.B. Harmon, Jason Bradshaw and Chad Russell, Kalaheo High, for "European Unification: Pathway to Peace"; second place, Jason Baum and Marrianne Sioson, Maui High, for "1-0: Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide"; third place, Ryan Bruno, Matthew Menor and Brandon Sakata, Waialua High, for "The Hawai'i Employment Relations Act and the 1946 Great Sugar Strike."

• Performance: First place, Sharmaine Saguibo, Danialle Calaustro and Shanay Coloma, Waialua High, for "What Women Want"; second place, Austin Spring, Daniel Allen and Sienna Palmer, Kahuku High, for "Through the Telescope"; third place, Ke'ilani Yang and Brooke Jones, Kahuku High, for "May It Please the Court."

The National History Day competition on the Mainland included first- and second-place winners from Hawai'i in the four format categories, as well as a number of documentary, display and performance projects.
