FSU wastes little time disposing of UH

Advertiser Staff

Fresno State wasted little time in disposing of Hawai'i, 6-2, last night in Western Athletic Conference baseball at Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.

In a game that finished in one hour, 42 minutes, Bob Runyon (10-8) gave up two runs, one earned, on eight hits and a walk for his ninth complete-game of the season for the Bulldogs (31-27, 18-11 WAC).

Hawai'i freshman starter Ricky Bauer (1-9) kept the game close until FSU scored four in the fifth to break a 1-all game on back-to-back, two-run doubles by Casey McGehee and Ben Fritz. Bauer allowed six runs on 11 hits in six innings for the Rainbows (16-39, 5-24).

Joey Myers, who homered Friday, hit the first of his two solo home runs in the third inning to give FSU a 1-0 lead.

Hawai'i tied the game in the fourth after a one-out double by Brent Cook followed by an RBI single by Scooter Martines.

After the Bulldogs' four-run fifth, FSU cushioned its lead in the sixth on Myers' second homer of the game.

The Rainbows got a run in the seventh. With one out, Derek Honma singled and one out later took third on a Tim Montgomery single. An errant pick-off to first base by Runyon allowed Honma to score.

The Rainbows, losers of six in a row, will try to avert a sweep at 10:15 a.m. HST in their season finale. Senior right-hander Sean Yamashita will start for Hawai'i.

Hawai'i coach Mike Trapasso said Gregg Omori, out with shoulder problems since the road trip began two weekends ago, might make an appearance as a pinch-hitter.

"I told him it's up to him," Trapasso said. "I'd like to get him in because he's meant so much to this program."
