• Veteran Maui travel and hospitality industry executive JOHN YOUNG has been named general manager of the Maui Myth & Magic Theatre, venue for the award-winning production "'Ulalena." Young is former general manager of the Royal Kahana Resort in Lahaina, and director of sales at the Maui Visitors Bureau, including its acclaimed Destination Maui promotion. Maui Myth & Magic, on Front Street in Lahaina, is a 700-seat venue, especially adaptable for unconventionally-staged productions, like the Hawaiian cultural production of "'Ulalena."

ROLAND L. HALPERN has been named executive director for Compassion In Dying of Hawai'i, a nonprofit group dedicated to improving the end-of-life experience and care for the terminally ill. The group's mission includes patient empowerment through education, working for improved pain management, and legalization of assisted death in certain situations.

BARRY D. PITEL, sales and marketing veteran and operator of Just the Ticket Travel has joined the sales team of the This Week Oahu tourist publication as sales executive.

MAELYN T. UYEHARA — among whose past projects have been the state Convention Center, Kahala Mandarin Oriental hotel, Kapolei Civic Center and Windward Community College Campus Center — has joined the property and construction consulting firm Rider Hunt levett & Bailey as associate principal. Uyehara, a veteran of professional cost estimating, will also manage the firm's Hawai'i office, overseeing finances, workload planning, marketing, client development and personnel management. She was previously with Kaikor Construction Associates.

• Kaikor Construction Associates Inc., a general engineering contractor firm, has hired CARRIE BUNCE as project engineer. Bunce was past project coordinator and research associate at the Next General Space telescope Group, on the Big Island.

JAMES LEONARD, whose Big Island involvement has included work on projects such as master plans for Parker Ranch Town Center and The Kamehameha Schools' East Hawai'i Campus, has been named principal/managing director of the Hilo office of PBR Hawai'i. Leonard joined the land planning, landscape architecture and environmental studies firm in 1988 as project manager and environmental planner. He moved to the Big Island as Hilo office manager in 1990. He was formerly with the state Department of Planning and Economic Development energy division, overseeing the commercial and industrial conservation programs.

ANTHONY F. GOULART, formerly a commercial lines underwriter with OneBeacon Insurance Group, in Glendale, Calif., has been named senior underwriter for the Commercial Insurance Division of locally owned/managed Island Insurance Companies. As such, he will be responsible for the entire commercial insurance underwriting process, from selection to pricing to sales.

• First Hawaiian Bank has announced the officer promotion of JANE E. BUSH to vice president in the Personal Trust Department; and the officer appointment of DAVID H. TSUDA as personal banking officer, Waikiki branch.

DEBRA CUNNINGHAM has been named to the newly created position of sales office manager for Booklines Hawai'i, supplier of Hawaiian books, videos, music and gifts. In addition to sales support and administration, she will also oversee the customer service department.

SHAUN M. MOSS, manager of the Oceanic Institute at Makapu'u shrimp program, was promoted to director of shrimp technology, in charge of a $16.6 million joint-venture research project, funded in part by the U.S. Department of Commerce, aimed at developing an economically viable disease-free shrimp for U.S. production. Moss is also an associate professor of marine science at Hawai'i Pacific University, and a past Fulbright Scholar.

CURTIS YOUNG has been named director of catering and conference services for the 539-room Big Island Orchid at Mauna Lani resort, overseeing more than 30,000 square feet of indoor meeting space, and over 75,000 square feet of outdoor event space. He also oversees the banquet department. Young is former director of event management at Kaua'i Marriott Resort and Beach Club.

TANJA FOULDS, catering/conference services manager, promoted to associate director of catering/conference services.

MARLA DUNN, most recently restaurant manager, Princess Ka'iulani Hotel, O'ahu, named The Orchid's banquet director.
