Lighting the spirits' path

Photos by Eugene Tanner • The Honolulu Advertiser

A toro-nagashi ceremony that sent 1,000 lanterns floating out to sea yesterday at Ala Moana park was broadcast live to Japan and elsewhere. Island canoe clubs transported the lanterns out, and people on shore, including 4,000 visitors from Japan, offered prayers for war dead and loved ones. Members of the sect around the world viewed the event on television through satellite links.
