Omori named to WAC's 2nd team

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i first baseman Gregg Omori was named second-team all-Western Athletic Conference yesterday.

The senior from Kane'ohe was the only Rainbow chosen by conference coaches among the 30-player first and second teams.

Omori, whose play was limited to one pinch-hitting appearance during UH's final six-game road trip because of shoulder problems, batted .273. He led the team with 32 RBIs and 18 doubles, which was third-highest in the WAC behind co-leaders Vincent Sinisi of Rice and Gabe Lopez of San Jose State, each with 22.

Freshman first baseman Sinisi was named Player of the Year and Fresno State junior Ben Fritz was Pitcher of the Year. Rice pitcher Philip Humber was voted Freshman of the Year and Wayne Graham, who led Rice to its sixth consecutive conference championship, was named Coach of the Year.
