Advertiser Staff

Kalani Robb of O'ahu's North Shore advanced to the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro Fiji yesterday after a narrow victory over Australian Michael Campbell.

In waves of 4 to 6 feet at Tavarua, Fiji, Robb edged Campbell, 23.0-22.4.

Three other Hawai'i surfers — Andy Irons, Sunny Garcia and Shane Dorian — have yet to complete their third-round heats.

Irons, ranked No. 1 on surfing's World Championship Tour, is scheduled to face Australian Troy Brooks. Garcia and Dorian will face each other in the third round.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of Waialua won the trials event Saturday to earn a spot in the Quiksilver Pro Fiji. However, he was eliminated in the second round Sunday by Australian Richard Lovett.

The contest is the fourth of 12 stops on the World Championship Tour.

MORE SURFING

Hawai'i team in contention: All 15 surfers from Hawai'i remained in contention yesterday in the World Surfing Games at Durban, South Africa.

The contest is considered the Olympics of surfing, with more than 600 participants representing 34 countries. Hawai'i was allowed to enter its own team, separate from the United States team.

Each division is following a double-elimination format.

Hawai'i's four entries in the junior surfing division (ages 18 and younger) are all undefeated through two rounds: Kekoa Bacalso, Nathan Carroll, Dustin Cuizon and Ola Eleogram.

Other undefeated Hawai'i surfers are Hank Gaskell (open men's surfing), Kristen Quizon (women's surfing), Bud Miyamoto (men's bodyboarding), Kekoa Auwae (longboarding) and David Shinbara (kneeboarding).
