Principal warns staff about sign waving

PEARL CITY The principal at Pearl City High School has laid down the law after members of the Pearl City football team were used as sign-wavers at a Mazie Hirono fund-raiser last week.

"It won't happen again," said Pearl City High School principal Gerald Suyama. "We teach in a public school system that is supposed to be apolitical."

Pearl City varsity football coach Onosai Tanuvasa took about 40 players to a Hirono fund-raiser in Honolulu on Friday.

After eating, about half of the group helped wave signs outside on the street. State Department of Education policy forbids a school or school organization from endorsing a political candidate. Several parents complained to school officials this week about the incident.

Suyama said Tanuvasa, who is in his first year as varsity coach at the school and was hired two months ago, will not be reprimanded.

"No reprimand, just a warning and a talk to help clear the air," said Suyama. "I didn't realize how politically active the coach was."

Tanuvasa could not be reached for comment.

Students can sign-wave and endorse a candidate as individuals, but never with a public school affiliation.
