Workers' comp insurer insolvent

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Insurance Commissioner Wayne Metcalf said today that a state court has ruled that HIH America Insurance Co. of Hawaii Inc., which had been the state's fourth-largest provider of workers' compensation coverage, is insolvent.

State insurance regulators seized the company in March 2001, after two California affiliates HIH America Compensation and Liability Co. and Great States Insurance Co. were seized by California regulators because of insolvency.

All three companies were owned by HIH America Insurance Services Inc., and owed creditors about $60 million at the time, state officials said.

Metcalf said the court decision will not affect injured workers' claims or their medical payments. All claims are being transferred to Hawaii Insurance Guaranty Association. People with questions about HIH can call the company at 532-1473, or the insurance division at 586-2790.

Questions about claims are being handled by Hawaii Insurance Guaranty at 528-1222.
