UH women sailors in second place

Advertiser Staff

The ninth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's sailing team began defense of its Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Championships yesterday by finishing in second place after the first of three days of competition in waters off Ke'ehi Lagoon.

The Rainbow Wahine amassed 54 points — 26 after a first-place finish in A division by senior All-American Molly O'Bryan and junior All-America crew Sarah Hitchcock, and 28 following a fourth-place finish in B division by Renee Curtis, Melody Torres, Jennifer Warnock and Lindsay Peters.

Old Dominion leads with a low-best score of 45. St. Mary's (Maryland) is third at 60, followed by Yale (64) and Charleston (81). There are 18 schools in the championships, which continues today and concludes tomorrow. Racing begins at 9:45 a.m. both days.

SURFING

• Not a Sunny day: Sunny Garcia, the last remaining Hawai'i surfer in the contest, was eliminated from the Quiksilver Pro Fiji yesterday at Tavarua, Fiji.

In waves of 6 to 8 feet, Garcia won his fourth round heat against Australian Daniel Wills, but then was defeated by Florida's Cory Lopez in the quarterfinals.

Garcia had two barrel rides that scored 8.1 and 8.0, but Lopez topped it with scores of 9.35 and 8.9.

Lopez is scheduled to take on Australian Michael Lowe in one semifinal; Shea Lopez, Cory's older brother, is scheduled to face defending world champion C.J. Hobgood in the other semifinal.

Earlier this week, Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons, Kalani Robb, Shane Dorian and Fred Patacchia Jr. were eliminated. Irons is still expected to be the No. 1 ranked surfer on the World Championship Tour after this contest.

• Hawai'i surfers in contention: Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani and Hank Gaskell from Maui remained undefeated in their respective divisions of the World Surfing Games yesterday at Durban, South Africa.

Bacalso won his fourth-round heat in the junior surfing division (ages 18 and younger), while Gaskell did the same in the open men's surfing division.

Eleven other Hawai'i surfers remained in contention through the consolation rounds: Mikey Mitchell, Raymond Reichle and Evan Valiere in open men's surfing; Nathan Carroll, Dustin Cuizon and Ola Eleogram in junior surfing; Bud Miyamoto in men's bodyboarding; Kristen Quizon and Shea Hodges in open women's surfing; Kekoa Auwae in open longboarding; David Shinbara in open kneeboarding.

Competitors in the consolation brackets can still qualify for this weekend's finals. Two Hawai'i competitors were eliminated — Chasity Baltazar in women's bodyboarding, and Kepa Kruse in men's bodyboarding.

More than 600 surfers are competing in the event, which is considered the Olympics of surfing.
