Critic's Choice

Mini-reviews of current stage productions by Advertiser theater critic Joseph Rozmiarek

Betty Burdick stars as Vivian Bearing, a scholar who battles cancer, in "Wit," which is in its final weekend at Manoa Valley Theatre.

"Fully Committed": A one-man show built around a reservation-taker for a swank New York restaurant and the people who call him. The gimmick of one actor playing 30 voices grabs our attention, but character development holds it. Repeats 8 p.m. today and Saturday at The ARTS at Marks Garage. Tickets: $15 show only; $48 includes three-course meal at Indigo. 521-9699.

"Super Secret Squad": Another opportunity to enjoy the evolution of a strong local playwright. Lee Cataluna (who's also an Advertiser columnist) once again skewers authority figures through a quintet of excellent actors, but this time with a more introspective outcome. Repeats 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays through June 16, at Kumu Kahua Theatre. Tickets: $5-$16. 536-4441.

"Wit": This sobering view of the final stage of life balances the 17th-century metaphysical poetry of John Donne against a woman's battle with ovarian cancer. The long one-act is filled with comic irony, a distinctly literate point of view and ultimate release. Repeats 8 p.m. today and Saturday, and 4 p.m. Sunday at Manoa Valley Theatre. Tickets: $25 general, $10 for those 25 and younger; $5 discount for seniors and military. 988-6131.
