THE LEFT LANE
Lei of good fortunes

Advertiser staff and news services

Just in time for graduations, going-away gifts and Father's Day is this fortune-cookie lei, the creation of artist Grant Kagimoto of Cane Haul Road. The cookies eschew the usual silly predictions and instead offer simple wishes of good fortune: "May great fortune be in your future," "We're proud of you" and "Celebrate your success." The lei will last about six months and are available at Native Books & Beautiful Things in Ward Warehouse and Wabi Sabi in Kaimuki for $15.

Making Maui's day

So, how do you get Clint Eastwood to say he'll come to your film festival?

For Barry and Stella Rivers, organizers of the upcoming June 12-16 Maui Film Festival in Wailea and at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, a little wooing went a long way. And, it didn't hurt that Eastwood has stakes (a home) in Wailea.

"It took him a while to check his schedule to see if he was going to be available," said Rivers about the "Make My Day" actor-director, who will be bestowed with the festival's 2002 Silversword Award for achievement in film-making.On June 14, Eastwood makes a public appearance at the Grand Wailea ballroom, when he is interviewed by Joel Siegel, and his Oscar-winning film, "Unforgiven," screens the same day. "We would have loved to show his newest film, but it won't be completed till later this year," said Rivers.

Among other celebrities expected:

  • Rosanna Arquette, whose "Searching for Debra Winger" film made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
  • John Corbett, star of the "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" film, "Sex and the City" and "Northern Exposure" TV series.
