IRS opens 3 phone lines locally

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's taxpayers now can call a local number to schedule face-to-face meetings with Internal Revenue Service staff members to ask about and solve tax problems, the IRS said.

The taxpayers can call 993-6983 in Hilo, 539-2099 in Honolulu, and 242-4493 in Wailuku.

For general tax information, taxpayers should still call the regular IRS help number: (800) 829-1040.

The face-to-face meetings can be set up to resolve such matters as IRS account and notice issues, make installment agreements to pay tax liabilities, request release of federal tax liens and levies, or file innocent-spouse claims when not liable for a spousal share of joint tax liabilities.

Callers to the new numbers should leave a message.

They will be contacted within two business days to set up an appointment.

Correction: An earlier version of this story listed an incorrect phone number for the IRS's Hilo office because of a source error.
