The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine's chances of repeating as national champions slipped further after a third-place standing on Day 2 of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Championships yesterday in waters off Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Old Dominion, which last won the championship in 1987, held a commanding lead with a team-low 105 points, followed by St. Mary's (Maryland) with 142. The Wahine, who were second on Wednesday, had 146 points with 14 of 18 races completed. The final four races are today.

Hawai'i senior All-American Molly O'Bryan and junior All-American crew Sarah Hitchcock finished with 64 points after the second day in the A division. Renee DeCurtis, Melody Torres, Jennifer Warnock and Lindsay Peters have 82 points in the B division for ninth-ranked Hawai'i.

Brown is fourth with 174 points, followed by Yale (176).

Racing begins today at 9:45 a.m. and will finish at about 1 p.m. at Ke'ehi. The winner will receive the Gerald C. Miller Trophy as national champions.

The women's meet is the first of three national championships at Ke'ehi. The ICSA/Ronstan North American Team Race Championship is Sunday-Tuesday, and the ICSA North American Coed Dinghy Championship Wednesday-next Friday.
