Five Hawai'i surfers advance in World Surfing Games

Kekoa Bacalso from Mililani remained undefeated in the junior surfing division (ages 18 and younger) of the Quiksilver World Surfing Games yesterday at Durban, South Africa.

Bacalso advanced through his fifth round heat yesterday to earn a spot in the semifinals.

Hank Gaskell from Maui is undefeated in the open men's division, but he did not compete yesterday.

In the longboard division, Kekoa Auwae advanced to the consolation final. If he gets through that, he will advance to the grand final.

In the open women's surfing division, Kristen Quizon and Shea Hodges remained in contention in the consolation rounds.

Eight Hawai'i competitors were eliminated yesterday: Mikey Mitchell, Evan Valiere and Raymond Reichle in open men's surfing; Dustin Cuizon, Ola Eleogram and Nathan Carroll in junior surfing; Bud Miyamoto in men's bodyboarding; and David Shinbara in kneeboarding.


MORE SURFING

• Irons still No. 1: Michael Lowe of Australia defeated the Lopez brothers to win the Quiksilver Pro Fiji yesterday.

In 4- to 6-foot waves at Tavarua, Fiji, Lowe defeated Cory Lopez in the semifinals, and then Shea Lopez in the final. Lowe earned $30,000.

Kaua'i's Andy Irons tied for 17th in the contest, but is still ranked No. 1 on the World Championship Tour. The contest was the fourth of 12 on this year's world tour.


BENEFIT

• Food Bank drive: Several former University of Hawai'i stars, including Joe Correia, Nani Cockett and Tony Tuioti, will assist the Giraffe Heroes canned food drive tomorrow at the Waipahu Recreation Center to benefit the Hawai'i Food Bank.

Pizza, keiki games and prizes and sporting activities at the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. event are free for the donation of two canned food items per person.

For an additional donation of canned items, tickets will be given for snacks.

The Giraffe Heroes is a group of at-risk female juveniles from the Waipahu area who undertake community service projects. They are sponsored by Spectrum Health Systems Inc., a private non-profit organization.


SOFTBALL

• 2003 schedule announced: The University of Hawai'i released its 2003 softball schedule, which includes seven tournaments, including four at home.

The Rainbow Wahine will open at home on Nov. 22 in the Rainbow Fall Classic, which includes Hawai'i Pacific, Chaminade, Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i-Hilo. The Western Athletic Conference schedule opens April 5 at Fresno State.


ROUGHMAN

• Rough enough: The Roughman Championship, featuring Hawai'i bouncers, firefighters and military, is tomorrow at World Cafe at 7:30 p.m.

The top prize is $1,000.
