Hawai'i briefs

Raw sewage spills into stream again

For the second time this week, a broken sewer line near College Walk and Kukui Street spilled raw sewage into Nu'uanu Stream.

The latest break occurred Wednesday morning in a 10-inch sewer line. City officials said a 20-foot section had collapsed and two breaks occurred elsewhere along the pipeline, spilling an undetermined amount of sewage.

The breaks were in the same 10-inch pipe that ruptured Oct. 28. That leak was fixed, but the second series of breaks was discovered while crews were flushing the repaired line with fresh water.

Wednesday's spill was stopped at 11 a.m. that day and repairs to the pipe were completed early yesterday morning.

NRA affiliate backs Lingle-Aiona ticket

The local affiliate of the National Rifle Association has endorsed the Republican gubernatorial team of Linda Lingle and James "Duke" Aiona.

The 1,000-member Hawai'i Rifle Association chose Lingle after she responded to an NRA survey on gun ownership rights. Democratic candidate Mazie Hirono did not submit a response, said association vice president Dr. Max Cooper.

Cooper said that 7,000 mailers have been sent out with the association's endorsements of Lingle and other candidates and that members would be waving signs to support the candidates.

Swimmers warned of jellyfish influx

The city Ocean Safety Division is warning beachgoers of an influx of box jellyfish expected through tomorrow.

Lifeguards reported a "fairly large number" of jellyfish at Ala Moana Beach on Wednesday, but only one sting was reported. There were fewer than 10 stings in Waikiki, Ocean Safety officials said.

Other areas that may be affected include Hanauma Bay, Poka'i Bay, Waimea Bay and Makaha beaches. The influx is expected to be over tomorrow.

Anyone who suffers a sting from a box jellyfish is advised to flush the area with white vinegar. Those who experience difficulty breathing, cramps, spasms or persistent pain are urged to seek medical attention. Lifeguard stations are equipped to provide first aid.
