Gum, Teramoto win consecutive OIA titles

Proving they aren't one-year wonders, Pearl City's Jodi-Ann Gum and Kailua's Bronson Teramoto repeated as O'ahu Interscholastic Association individual bowling champions yesterday at Schofield Bowl.

Gum, a junior, amassed a six-game total of 1,159 pins to 1,112 by runner-up Lyn Quizon of Leilehua to capture the girls' crown.

Teramoto, a senior, didn't have it easy. His 1,253 pins were just four better than runner-up Colin Yoshimoto of Mililani in the boys' competition.

"I'm really, really happy," Gum said of her second consecutive title.

Unlike last year, Gum got off to a strong start, rolling a game-high 218 in the first game. She finished with a strong second half, rolling a 212 in the fourth game and 200 in the sixth and final game. Last year, she opened with a 150, but finished strong to win the title at Leeward Bowl.

Despite competing at 'Aiea Bowl during the regular season, she said she didn't notice much of a difference with Schofield's lanes.

"It's hard to say," she said. "I just go with the flow."

Gum's win should not have come as much of a surprise. During the regular season, she averaged 199, some 13 pins higher than the next closest bowler in the Western Division.

Teramoto said he noticed some differences between Schofield and Wai'alae Bowl, where the East competes during the regular season,.

"Schofield is easier than Wai'alae," he said. "(Schofield) is not as slower."

He said at the slower Wai'alae lanes, the ball "hangs too much." During the regular season, he averaged 189. Yesterday, he averaged 209.

Teramoto, though, did his homework. He said he practiced at Schofield on Saturday and Tuesday.

Teramoto had a strong first half (three games), rolling a 259, 241 and 206.

But after the lunch break, he rolled a 150, 217 and 180, to hang on to his advantage against Yoshimoto, whose lowest score was a 190.

"I threw a lot of splits," Teramoto said of his second-half performance.

Last year, Teramoto rolled 200 games wire-to-wire to finish with 1,385 pins at Leeward.
