Tonight's Must-See

"Gladiator" (2000) conclusion, 8 p.m., ABC. In the first half of this Oscar-winning epic we met Maximus, a triumphant Roman general. Now the second half puts him in the ring. It's a sweeping story of a noble man in an ignoble time.

"Heat" (1995), TNT, or "The Score" (2001), Showtime; both 6 p.m. Robert De Niro is at his best when doing tough crime tales with smart scripts. Here are two prime examples. "Heat" watches a robbery and its aftermath, bouncing between a great crook (De Niro) and a great cop (Al Pacino). "The Score" links a veteran crook (De Niro) and a newcomer (beautifully played by Edward Norton).

Of Note

"The Candidate" (1972), 7 p.m., Pax TV. Michael Ritchie brilliantly directed this movie. He showed how skillful media work could turn a handsome unknown (played by Robert Redford) into a senatorial contender.
