Vehicle collision kills woman, 56

A 56-year-old woman was killed yesterday in an early-morning collision between a pickup truck and car on Kamehameha Highway near Waikane Store.

The 6:10 a.m. collision forced police to close Kamehameha Highway in both directions.

Yesterday's fatality, the 57th of the year, occurred about 16 hours after a 40-year-old Wai'anae man was killed Thursday in Palama when the Toyota Corolla he was driving apparently ran a red light and struck a city bus. His death was the ninth traffic fatality for October.

Vehicular homicide Sgt. William Baldwin said yesterday's collision involved a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck headed toward Kahuku that crossed the center dividing line into the path of a 1992 Nissan Maxima traveling toward Kane'ohe.

The woman driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were two women in the cab of the truck and five adult passengers in the bed, Baldwin said. Two men and two women were taken by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center, where they are listed in guarded condition, Baldwin said.

Bank robbery suspect charged

A 55-year-old man has been charged by the FBI for allegedly robbing First Hawaiian Bank's University branch at 2411 S. King St. on Tuesday.

Sasuf Samori allegedly demanded money from a customer service officer. Police apprehended Samori while he was still inside the bank.

In other bank robbery news, federal authorities are expected to charge a 37-year-old man for allegedly robbing Bank of Hawaii's main branch on Oct. 8. He has been at O'ahu Community Correctional Center since his arrest Oct. 9 on a probation revocation warrant.

Clues sought in animal deaths

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the person who killed two kittens and a small dog on Sunday by hanging them from a tree branch in Makaha.

A groundskeeper at Maunalahilahi Beach Park found the animals hanging from the branch. The animals belonged to a woman who was forced into homelessness because of a disability, authorities said. She had to leave the animals on the beach to go to an appointment.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Hawaiian Humane Society at 946-2187 ext. 211, or Animal CrimeStoppers at 955-8300. The Animal CrimeStoppers program was introduced earlier this fall.

"We realize that an act of cruelty against an animal is just another form of violence in our community — violence that should not be tolerated," Honolulu police Detective Letha DeCaires said.
