Filipino council endorses Hirono

The United Filipino Council of Hawaii yesterday endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mazie Hirono and lieutenant governor candidate Matt Matsunaga.

Council president Dwayne Mariano Bueno said Hirono and her staff have provided great assistance to the council and the Filipino community. Bueno said it was the first time the group endorsed a woman for public office.

Hirono and Republican Linda Lingle have been working to woo Filipino American voters, who represent a significant chunk of undecided voters in a virtually tied race. Lingle also has a group of Filipino supporters led by L & L Drive-In founder Eddie Flores Jr.

Dobelle backs Hirono in TV ad

University of Hawai'i President Evan Dobelle, speaking as a private individual, is endorsing Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono in the race for governor in a television spot.

"I've seen Mazie look into the eyes of children," Dobelle says in the ad, which aired last night. "She doesn't see bureaucracy, she sees potential."

In choosing to make the endorsement, Dobelle said, "It's not about Linda (Lingle), it's pro-Mazie. She thinks with her heart first, and I care about that. When she says yes, she'll stand in a hurricane with you."

The ads were paid for by the Hirono campaign.

Hirono spokeswoman Barbara Tanabe said Hirono's campaign was "thrilled" with gaining Dobelle's support.
