Hawai'i Pacific holds off Chaminade

Susy Garbelotti pounded a match-high 38 kills and Teisa Fotu added 15 as the Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball team defeated Chaminade 31-33, 30-20, 30-20, 27-30, 15-9 in a Pacific West Conference match last night at McCabe Gym.

The Sea Warriors are 11-6 overall and 5-2 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 14-5 and 6-3.

Valasi Sepulona led Chaminade with 18 kills. The two teams play again tonight at 7:30 in a non-conference match.

SOCCER

UH shuts out San Jose State: Wanette Miyashiro scored two goals and Natasha Kai and Mia Moe one each to lead the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team to a 4-0 Western Athletic Conference victory over host San Jose State at Spartan Stadium last night.

Hawai'i is 9-7-2 overall and 5-2-0 in the WAC. San Jose State is 3-10-5 and 1-4-2. Hawai'i closes its regular season with a WAC match against Fresno State (5-2) tomorrow.

Kai, who was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, also had two assists and increased her UH season record points total to 35. She also holds the UH season record for goals with 15.

Southern Methodist (6-1 WAC) clinched the conference regular season title with a 3-1 victory over Texas El-Paso (6-2) in Dallas last night.

KARATE

National meet at Blaisdell: The City and County of Honolulu and the USA National Karate Federation are hosting the Junior Olympics and Masters Karate Championships this weekend at the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena.

Competition began yesterday and ends today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event includes karate, kung fu, kendo, judo and kenpo, and is open to ages 5-20 and 35 years old and older. Participants are from all parts of the United States.

Winners in some teen divisions will be asked to participate with the USA National Competition Team with an opportunity to compete against international teams, according to meet organizers.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Radford seeks coach: Radford High is seeking applicants for its varsity football coach position.

The school is looking for a replacement for Kelly Sur, who resigned earlier in the week.

WATER POLO

BYUH routs Santa Clara: Vanja Kalabic scored five goals to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's water polo team to a 13-2 victory over Santa Clara yesterday at Kamehameha School's Kalani'opu'u Pool.

In another match, Cal Baptist beat Chaminade, 11-8.
