• Hagadone Printing Co. announced last week that it has signed a partnership with local packaging supplier, Creative Packaging LLC, to perform packaging printing in the state. The new venture will make it possible for Hawai'i's businesses to produce their packaging materials locally and will offer faster turn-around time than Mainland vendors for the same price or better.

Creative Packaging, established in 1977, is in the Campbell Industrial Park and specializes in the manufacturing of folding cartons and thermoformed plastic products. Creative Packaging LLC has 14 employees. Hagadone Printing, a commercial and publications printer, offers digital prepress and printing services and full mailing and bindery capability.

• Dual Trading Inc., a newly established import and wholesale business founded in Honolulu by the husband and wife team of Jonagustine and Kristine Lim, earlier this year acquired exclusive rights to distribute Tanduay Distillers' rum products in Hawai'i. Tanduay Distillers is one of the major alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverage manufacturers in the Philippines, producing two brands for the international market: Tanduay Premium Dark Rum and Tanduay Premium Light Rum. Dual Trading introduced Tanduay Rum in Hawai'i last month at several O'ahu stores: Daiei stores in Kaheka, Kailua, and Waipahu; Pacific Supermarket in Waipahu; Fujioka Supermarket in Haleiwa; and Tamura's in Wahiawa.

• Richard Turbin, founder and president of the law offices of Richard Turbin, has become the first Hawai'i graduate of Harvard University's School of Law to receive that institution's Traphagen Distinguished Alumni Speaker Award recognizing alumni who have become dynamic attorneys in their communities, and an inspiration to law students. Turbin is also the first plaintiffs personal injury attorney to have been chosen for the award.

• The Ponds at Punalu'u, an assisted-living facility, was recently granted an assisted-living license. Effective Sept. 19, the license validates that the facility has met the criteria of the Office of Health Care Assurance for an assisted-living facility.

• The Patisserie has opened a retail outlet at the OHANA Waikiki Surf hotel, at Royal Hawaiian and Kuhio avenues. Owner Rolf Winkler and Barbara Campbell, vice president for retail development and leasing for Outrigger Enterprises Inc., announced the opening of the 1,191-square-foot shop.

• Eddie Flores Jr., president and co-founder of L&L Drive-Inn, says construction is under way for L&L stores in Daly City, Calif., and Kapolei. According to Census 2000 data, Daly City is one of the most diversified communities in California. The store will be the third to open in the Bay Area.

• The June 2007 American Society of Engineering Educators' convention will take place at the Hawai'i Convention Center. It is projected to draw 3,200 attendees, $9.2 million in visitor spending, $760,000 in state tax revenues and 6,300 hotel-room nights.

• Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii was honored with the "Best of the Best" Award in the Southwest region from Dean Foods, Meadow Gold's parent company. The award was announced earlier this year at a Dean Foods meeting.

• Three visitor-industry executives for the state have been featured in Travel Agent magazine's "Most Powerful Women" listing. Marsha Wienert, executive director of the Maui Visitors Bureau, Sue Kanoho, executive director of the Kaua'i Visitors Bureau, and Brigid McDonnell, director of North America travel trade marketing for the Hawai'i Visitors & Convention Bureau, were recognized in the "Destinations" category for their achievements in the past year.

• Scottrade, an online brokerage based in St. Louis, has moved its Honolulu branch to the East Tower of 700 Bishop St., Suite 107. The former location was at 1001 Bishop St., Pacific Tower.

• Allstate Insurance Co. has announced that Exclusive Agent Davidson Owan has opened an agency in Pearl City at 945 Kamehameha Highway, Suite 7; exclusive agent Lottie Chun has opened an agency in Honolulu at 1144 10th Ave., No. 202A.

• Halekulani resort is completing a two-year, $20 million refurbishment including new guestroom finishings, state-of-the-art broadcast wireless technology, and expanded business and fitness centers. The resort has also broken ground to build a day-spa facility.

• Hawaiian Eye Center in September celebrated its 27th year with Dr. Christopher Tortora becoming the center's new owner. Dr. John Corboy, who founded the business in 1975, retired.

• Allenby and Associates, a full-service architectural firm licensed in Hawai'i and California, announced the opening of an office on the Kona coast.

• September marked the completion of Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel's wedding chapel renovation. New features of the Angel Chapel by the Sea include a cascading waterfall over a glass wall entrance and a harbor-front gazebo for outdoor weddings. The chapel's $200,000 renovation follows the hotel's $27 million renovation, which was completed in March.

• The Hawai'i Visitors & Convention Bureau on Sept. 10 presented three Hawai'i organizations with its Maile award: Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Honolulu Academy of Arts, and Hawaiian Host. The bureau also honored Kaua'i mayor Maryanne Kusaka with a Mahalo Award for her support of tourism on Kaua'i. The Maile Award is the highest honor given by the bureau to an individual or organization. The three Maile winners were honored for being "community pillars that have each had a major impact in perpetuating Hawai'i's standing as the world's premier visitor destination."

• Eileen Mortenson, owner of 22-year-old public relations firm Eileen Mortenson Communications, has joined PRConsultants Group, a nationwide group of public relations and marketing specialists that services the needs of national accounts in local markets.
