HONOLULU

Free gifts await needy families

The Salvation Army on O'ahu will accept applications from tomorrow to Nov. 15, at three locations from families who need help with holiday gifts for their children.

The Angel Tree Program, a national charitable program for getting the community involved in helping needy families during the holidays, is one way eligible families could get help.

Applicants must provide photo identification of themselves and their children, with proof of age, income and address. Eligible families will receive a gift for each child under 12, as well as food for a holiday meal.

Applications will be accepted at the following locations:

  • Honolulu — 296 N. Vineyard Blvd., 10 a.m.-noon, 521-6551
  • Kane'ohe — 45-175 Waikalua Road, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., 235-1408.
  • Leeward — 98-612 Moanalua Loop, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., 487-1636.


WINDWARD

Run/walk to aid school libraries

Windward families will participate in a Read To Me 1-mile run/walk to raise money for books and newspapers for their schools beginning at 8:30 a.m. today at Windward Community College.

The event will include readers from the Family Book Festival, arts and craft activities, the Keiki Farm petting zoo and Scholastic Book Fair.

Participating schools will earn $7 for every registered runner they recruit.

The event is sponsored by Read To Me International Foundation, Windward Community College, The Advertiser's Newspapers in Education Program and Hawai'i Pizza Hut.

Astronomers meet in Kona

KEAUHOU, Hawai'i — A six-day meeting of international astronomers to discuss the mysteries of the Milky Way will start today in Kona.

Several Mauna Kea observatories, led by Gemini Observatory's North Unit in Hilo and on Mauna Kea, are sponsoring the gathering at the Keauhou Beach Resort. About 100 astrophysicists from a dozen countries are expected to attend.
