The University of Hawai'i returned to the No. 1 position in the USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches poll for the first time since 1996.

The 21-0 Rainbow Wahine, who had occupied the No. 2 position for the last eight weeks this season, replaced Southern California after the Trojans' Saturday loss to Stanford. UH plays Stanford Sunday at Stan Sheriff.

The previously No. 6 ranked Cardinal beat USC, 30-26, 16-30, 26-30, 30-28, 16-14, before 2,115 in Los Angeles. USC is 19-1 and Stanford, which has moved up to No. 4, is 21-3.

The last time UH was No. 1 in the USA Today poll was Oct. 28, 1996.

UH received 49 of 65 first-place votes in voting among coaches. USC got 12, Stanford 3 and UC-Santa Barbara 1.
