LOS ANGELES Mayor James Hahn is planning a 10-day mission to Asia to boost tourism and promote the city's trade opportunities.
Hahn, three City Council members and 15 city staffers will depart Nov. 16 for a trip with stops in China, Japan and South Korea. The trip is expected to cost $450,000. Asian tourism to Los Angeles has been declining for several years.
"We are still suffering the effects of a bad economy in Asia, especially in Japan," Hahn said. "I think we need to drum up some business. ... It's really about bringing more dollars back here to Los Angeles."
The mayor also is to talk to Asian airline carriers about the LAX master plan to promote its benefits, and also to encourage more use of such regional airports as Ontario.
