Man arrested in stabbing

Big Island police said yesterday they had arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with a stabbing on Saturday.

The man was being held in the Kona police cell block while detectives continued to investigate.

Police said they arrested him after a 44-year-old man was stabbed twice in the upper torso Saturday night at an apartment complex in Kailua, Kona.

The man underwent emergency surgery at Kona Community Hospital and remained in the hospital yesterday in satisfactory condition.

Fund-raisers for Kailua program

Kailua High School's Polynesian Voyaging Program will have three fund-raisers for a December cultural exchange trip to New Zealand.

Tomorrow, Pizza Hut will contribute a percentage of its profit from pizzas sold to people who mention the program's name. Order a large pizza and get the second one at a reduced price.

The program will host a steak dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 16 at the school's cafeteria. Cost is $12, and reservation and payment must be mailed to the school by Friday.

Students will also provide a Thanksgiving imu to cook dinner. The cost is $10 per tray of food in a 13-inch by 21-inch aluminum pan. Food should be seasoned and wrapped well in foil. Reservations and payment must be mailed to the school by Nov. 20.

Drop-off will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Nov. 27 and pickup will be from 8 to 9 a.m. Nov. 28.

Disabled drivers sought for study

The Disability and Communication Access Board is doing a study to identify problems people with disabilities encounter when applying for a Hawai'i state driver's license.

School bond issue on tap

The pros and cons of the proposed constitutional amendment that would allow the state to authorize tax-free revenue bonds for private schools, will be debated live tonight as part of the "Vote! 2002: Candidates Debate" series sponsored by 'Olelo Community Television.

The debate will air from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oceanic Channel 54 and Oceanic Digital Control.

Arguing in favor will be Rep. Mark Takai and Robert Witt of the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools. Arguing against will be Karen Ginoza and Joan Lewis, president and vice president, respectively, of the Hawaii State Teachers Association.
