Service award to be presented

Planned Parenthood of Hawai'i will announce this year's Bette Takahashi Service Award winner at its annual meeting tomorrow at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

The award is given each year to honor a person for his or her contributions in reproductive healthcare, in education or in the protection and advocacy of reproductive choice.

The guest speaker will be Patt Morrison, a member of a reporting team at the Los Angeles Times that has won two Pulitzer Prizes. Morrison also is a commentator on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" and provides observations on American politics for the BBC's "Up All Night."

Planned Parenthood Federation of America has honored Morrison with "The Maggie Award" for her media coverage of reproductive rights and healthcare issues.

Police searching for missing teens

Police last night were looking for two developmentally disabled teenage girls who were reported missing in Mililani.

Savannah Scott, 16, and Kelsey Kila, 15, are students at Mililani High School, police said. They were last seen near the Mililani Post Office about 2 p.m. yesterday.

The parents of Scott said that the girls may have wandered off together from Mililani High School for a day outing and that something untoward might have happened.

The parents said last night they feared that the girls may be lost in a wooded area of Mililani.

Scott is 5 feet 2, 160 pounds with fair skin, blond hair and blue eyes. She was last wearing blue jeans, brown short-sleeved top, black running shoes and may have had a black backpack.

A description of Kila was not available last night.

Anyone with information about the two is asked to call police at 529-3115.


Bob McDermott seeks Mink's seat

Former state Rep. Bob McDermott filed nomination papers yesterday for the Jan. 4 special election to replace the late Patsy Mink in the 108th Congress.

McDermott was Mink's Republican opponent in the general election and garnered more than 71,000 votes for the 2nd Congressional District seat, which represents rural O'ahu and the Neighbor Islands.

Former state Rep. Ed Case and former Honolulu City Council member Kekoa Kaapu have also filed for the race.


Documentary screening added

"An Untold Triumph," the documentary about the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments of World War II, has won the Hawai'i International Film Festival Blockbuster Audience Award and has been accorded an additional showing tomorrow.

The screening is set for 6:30 p.m. at Doris Duke at the Academy, the renamed theater at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Director Noel "Sonny" Izon will take questions from the audience at the screening.

The film is being prepared for Mainland screenings and for a national broadcast on PBS next year. An additional O'ahu screening is being planned for February.

Admission at tomorrow's showing is $7 ($6 for HIFF 'Ohana members, students, seniors and military). Information: 528-3456.


Driver checkpoints up this weekend

The Honolulu Police Department will be conducting impaired-driver checkpoints during this Veterans Day weekend and the upcoming holiday season.

As of Nov. 4, 57 people have died on O'ahu as the result of traffic accidents, and 14 have been determined to be alcohol or drug related.


Armed robber being sought

HILO, Hawai'i — A masked man holding a revolver held up the Tako Taco restaurant in Waimea earlier this week, police said yesterday.

Police said the robber entered the restaurant between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., took about $80 from a 28-year-old employee and ran out the back door.

Police described the robber as 6 feet, 200 pounds and wearing a hooded sweatshirt and latex gloves.
