Lingle wants end to jail negotiations

Advertiser Staff

Governor-elect Linda Lingle will ask Gov. Ben Cayetano to stop negotiations for a new jail in Halawa Valley, Lt. Governor-elect James "Duke" Aiona announced today.

Cayetano said last month that he was negotiating with developers to build a jail adjacent to the Halawa Correctional facility. It would replace the crowded O'ahu Community Correctional Center in Kalihi.

Lingle's position is that she would not want to be bound by an agreement that her administration did not negotiate, Aiona said.
