KA'A'AWA — Tina Eakin and Jimmy Davis won yesterday's MountainMan at Kualoa Ranch and secured the overall championships of the three-triathlon series.

Davis completed the 500-meter ocean swim, 30-kilometer mountain bike ride through Kualoa Valley and 5-kilometer trail run at Kualoa Ranch in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 28 seconds.

After catching the leaders during the bike portion, Davis held on during the run to finish 39 seconds ahead of Lou Ortiz.

The women's race was tight with Eakin catching early leader Lindsay Price after two miles of the run. Eakin finished in 1:22:30, 64 seconds ahead of Price.

Price, 30, knew she had to get a head start going into the run to have a chance at beating Eakin. "I did get ahead of Tina, I had three minutes on her, but she is just too strong in the run," Price said.

Eakin, a 31-year-old Pearl Harbor Navy mechanic, was pleased with her victory.

"I am not used to biking on a single (narrow) track," Eakin said of the ride through Kualoa Valley. "I was happy that I could catch up to Lindsay even though I fell three or four times on the bike."

Eakin produced one of the fastest overall run times of the race in 19:27.

Eakin won her second race in the series and scored the maximum 24 points (best two finishes out of three races).

Eakin and Price recently competed in the World Ironman Championships in Kailua, Kona, and the X-Terra World Championships in Wailea, Maui.

Davis, 25, who is in the Army in Hawai'i, is relatively new to the sport.

Davis did all his work on the bike catching everyone except for the relay teams, and finished with a solid run.

"I was only sixth overall last year, so this year has been really good for me," Davis said.

There will be no rest for Davis, who said he would run in today's Val Nolasco Memorial Half-Marathon. He also will be racing in the Ironman New Zealand next March.

Chad Seymour, who placed third overall, and second in the series, had the day's fastest swim time in 7:03. Seymour finished one point behind Davis (21) in the overall standings.

The fastest biker was Ray Brust (41:43), who competed on a relay team with Brigitte Egbert and Bob Egbert.

Fastest run of the day went to Tom Feringer (18:25), who teamed up with Paul Caton and Robert Ryan.

This was the eighth time that Team Boca hosted the Pflueger Honda MountainMan triathlon, which is part of the Global Environmental Series.
