Hawai'i Pacific beats Western New Mexico

Susy Garbelotti and Teisa Fotu each had 20 kills as Hawai'i Pacific beat host Western New Mexico last night.

The scores of the non-conference match were 21-30, 30-27, 30-22, 30-27.

Western New Mexico's Kimberly Tano, a St. Francis High graduate, had 17 kills and Kahuku High graduate Malia Kalui had 36 assists and 19 digs.

HPU is 13-8. Western New Mexico is 17-14.

The Sea Warriors close the regular season with a Pacific West Conference match against Brigham Young-Hawai'i on Saturday. The Seasiders already have clinched the Pacific West title.


MORE VOLLEYBALL

• Hilo wins, too: Sara Pilgreen had 22 kills and 22 digs and Tiffanie Ollison added 17 kills and 29 digs as Hawai'i-Hilo outlasted host Montana State-Billings in five games last night.

The scores of the non-conference match were 34-36, 30-23, 25-30, 33-31, 17-15.

The Yellowjackets outhit the Vulcans .153-.130 and outblocked them 18-7.

Hilo improved to 9-16, while Billings dropped to 8-16.


CROSS COUNTRY

• Four qualify for NCAA II meet: Four Hawai'i Division II cross country athletes qualified for the NCAA II National Championships yesterday at the Division II West Regional meet in Fresno, Calif.

Christian Madsen of HPU was the lone male qualifier from Hawai'i, placing sixth overall in the 10K (32 minutes, 45 seconds).

In the women's 6K race, HPU's Sayuri Kusutani was second overall (21:27). Freshman Chelsea Smith of BYU-Hawai'i finished fourth, setting a school record with a time of 22:13. HPU junior Nina Christensen finished fifth (22:15) to also qualify for the national meet.

The HPU men's team finished 10th in the 16-team field, and BYU-Hawai'i finished 14th.

In the women's race, HPU was 8th, BYU-Hawai'i 13th and Chaminade 18th in the 20-team field.

The national meet is Nov. 26, in Ashland, Ohio.


SWIMMING

• Ex-UH athlete wins award: Former University of Hawai'i swimmer Georgi Kinsela will receive the NCAA's Degree Completion Financial Aid Award.

The award goes to former student-athletes who were on scholarship and have 30 or less hours remaining to obtain their bachelor's degree.

Kinsela, a former individual medley specialist and breaststroker, completed her eligibility in spring 2002.


CLINIC

• Coaching workshops: The Positive Coaching Alliance, which stresses building the self-esteem and self-confidence of youth athletes, will be held this week at four locations.

The workshops aim at reversing the trend of Hawai'i's youth being burned out by coaches who want to win at any cost.

The workshops cost $5 a person and will be held:

• Nov. 14, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park (coaches only)

• Nov. 15, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Kaua'i County Building (coaches only)

• Nov. 16, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (parents) and 3-5 p.m. (coaches) at Maui Cameron Center

• Nov. 18, 6-8 p.m at Ilima Intermediate School cafeteria (parents).
