• Approval by the federal Department of Agriculture for crop insurance for Island fruit crops and orchards will be the subject of a series of five islandwide "Listening Sessions," beginning Wednesday for local farmers. The sessions are hosted by the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), and AgriLogic Inc., the consulting firm contracted by the USDA to develop the insurance policies. On Sept. 26, USDA approved the addition of a number of Island crops i including bananas, coffee, guava, lychee, mango, papaya, rambutan and atemoya i to existing approved insurance programs for macadamia nuts and nursery production. At the upcoming discussions, farmers will be able to see how the insurance program will work, help them manage risk on their farm, and offer a chance to tell those developing policies what is needed in terms of coverage. • The new University of Hawai'i medical school complex, undergoing construction on 10 acres in Kaka'ako, will be the subject of an address Thursday by UH medical school dean Dr. Edwin C. Cadman.
