Committee to address crime
The Kailua Neighborhood Board will form an ad hoc committee to address crime in Windward O'ahu and identify specific recommendations to deal with it at 7 p.m. today at the Kailua District Park meeting room.
The board hopes to have statistics about the crime rate and will ask the committee to develop ideas to help police, said Kathy Bryant-Hunter, board chairwoman.
Chili cook-off set for Nov. 23
A benefit chili cook-off will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 23 at The Shack restaurant, 1051 Keolu Drive in Kailua. Proceeds from the event will go to HUGS (Help, Understanding and Group Support), a nonprofit group which provides support services for families with seriously ill children.
The event will also feature carnival games, a silent auction and entertainment. For information, call 261-1191.

Man arrested in Palolo burglary
Police have arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion that he forced a 71-year-old woman to lie down on the floor while he burglarized her Palolo home Sept. 19. The man was arrested Thursday for first-degree burglary and kidnapping before being released pending further investigation.
Four workshops to focus on whales
A series of workshops beginning Wednesday on regulations involving Hawai'i's humpback whales will include updates on whale research and conservation.
The sessions, sponsored by the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and other state and federal agencies, are free, but participants must register by calling the sanctuary office on your island. Workshops will be 7 to 9 p.m.:
- Wednesday at Kealakehe High School Library, Big Island;
- Thursday at the Kaua'i Sanctuary Office, 4370 Kukui Grove Street, Suite 206;
- Nov. 19 on O'ahu at Aloha Tower 7th Floor Meeting Room; and
- Nov. 20 at the Maui Sanctuary Office, 726 South Kihei Road.
