Kamehameha volleyball team draws No. 1 seed

Advertiser Staff

Defending state champion Kamehameha is the No. 1 seed for the Nissan Boys State Volleyball Championships Wednesday through Saturday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Warriors (15-1) were seeded ahead of No. 2 Pearl City (12-1), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, No. 3 Seabury Hall (11-1), the Maui Interscholastic League champion and No. 4 Kealakehe (14-1), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion.

Rounding out the 12-team field are Mililani (11-2), Campbell (11-3) and Leilehua (9-5) of the OIA; Iolani (14-2) of the ILH; Waiakea (12-3) and Ka'u (13-3) of the BIIF; and Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion Waimea (6-1).

There are no unbeaten teams in the tournament. The closest would be Pearl City; its sole loss is a forfeit to Waialua for using an ineligible player because of a clerical error.

Unlike past seasons, there is no pool play. In that format, the top two teams from four pools advanced to the quarterfinals. Instead, like team tournaments in other sports, the unseeded teams meet on the first day to play into the quarterfinals to face the seeded teams, who draw byes on the first day.
