Tour de Cure rerouted but still on

The route's been altered, but the mission remains the same.

The American Diabetes Association Hawaii's Bud Light Tour de Cure, a bicycle ride fund-raiser, takes place Sunday, starting and ending at Kapi'olani Park.

But because of the state Department of Transportation's emergency closure of Kalaniana'ole Highway near Makapu'u for work on a cliff face, bicyclists of the second annual event can expect minor changes.

The 50 kilometer route, which begins at 7 a.m., will turn around at Sandy Beach; the 25-kilometer course at 7:30 a.m. will turn around at Maunalua Bay.

"We're working hard to raise awareness of the epidemic of diabetes in Hawai'i, and we're also looking to raise money to help us support the educational programs that we do ... here," said Wendy Sefo, executive director. She expects about 300 participants this year.

Registration is $35; on teams of 5 people or more each pay $25, which includes a free T-shirt and goodie bag. Same-day registration will be accepted, beginning at 6 a.m. Forms are available at diabetes-hawaii.org/register or by calling 947-5979.
