Foundation aids 356 students

The Augustine Educational Foundation has awarded $282,000 in scholarships to 356 students enrolled in Hawai'i Catholic schools. Recipients ranged from kindergarten through 12th grade.


L&L owners help out again

L&L Drive-Inn owners and founders, Eddie Flores Jr. and Johnson Kam, have donated $8,000 in scholarships to the University of Hawai'i Foundation. For the past six years they have given scholarships to help deserving students at colleges in the UH system.

Recipients of this year's scholarships are: Betsy Colman, Konawaena High School; Kenneth Sakata, Kalani High School; Travis Nishino, Kalani High School; Allan Garcia, St. Louis School; Judy Relosimon, Farrington High School; Priscilla Navares, Farrington High School; Maria Rivera, Waipahu High School; Dennis Ke, McKinley High School; and Liane Wong, Radford High School.


Others receive scholarships

Other scholarships were awarded by:

  • The Hawaii Chinese Civic Club to Jonathan Lui, Maryknoll High School graduate attending the University of Iowa, majoring in biomedical engineering.
  • Kimberly-Clark has selected Cathleen Okabe of Marquette University to receive a $7,500 scholarship for academic achievement.
  • Executive Women International has awarded a scholarship to Jennifer Light, Moanalua High School.
  • Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club to University of Hawai'i-Manoa students Edward Akana, Ian Chun, Jared Chun, Darlaine Dudoit, Natalie Ho, Kimokalani Jarett and Nalani Wilson; University of Hawai'i-Hilo students Kaoi Lundin and Puali'ili'i Rossi; Robyn Bachini of the University of California-Santa Barbara; Prudence Hokoana-Gormley of Maui Community College; Harriet Juarez of Chaminade University; Kathleen Mokuau of the University of Oregon; Megan Naumu of Brigham Young University of Hawai'i; Leila Sanchez Albijino of Hawai'i Pacific University; Micah Wong of Oregon State; Sheri Yamaguchi of Mount Saint Mary; Kaui Chung of Kapi'olani Community College; and Shanelle Sanborn, also of Kapi'olani Community College.
  • DeVry University partial tuition scholarship has been awarded to John Ibanez, a Moanalua High School graduate.
  • Darrel Molina of Waipahu and Denise Oishi of Honolulu spent a few months with host families in Japan as part of their participation in the Japan-America Friendship Scholars Program. Upon their arrival in Japan, the students visited several top Japanese government officials before joining their host families and spending the summer as typical Japanese teenagers do.


Mililani man's car on calendar

Ronald Hanada's 1934 Ford Cabriolet has been selected as one of the top 84 classic and custom cars in the world.

It appears in the 2003 edition of The Snapshots Classics and Custom Customer Car Calendar, which complements a Snap-on Tools effort to promote professionalism and integrity among today's automotive technicians.

Hanada lives in Mililani.


Maui student has right stuff

Irachel Chantilly Mers of Maui is one of 46 high-school students to have graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Associates Youth Leadership Program.

The program is a weeklong course for high-school sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated above average academic standards, as well as good citizenship and leadership qualities.

Mers was selected by her peers as one of the students responsible for addressing the graduation class.
