UH to interview for No. 2 AD post

The University of Hawai'i soon will begin interviewing candidates to fill what has been the No. 2 position in sports as athletic director Herman Frazier prepares to embark upon a major restructuring of the department.

A UH official said "more than a dozen" applications were received by the Nov. 4 deadline to fill the associate athletic director position left vacant by the departure of Jim Donovan.

Donovan, who spent eight years as associate AD, became director of the ConAgra Foods Hawai'i Bowl in September.

Frazier said the position pays between $80,000 and $125,000. He said a committee will review the applications and he hopes to have a selection made next month with the person in place in January.

Although Donovan had been the department's chief financial officer, Frazier said he will assume the financial duties for now until a planned reorganization is completed next year. "Basically I need to get a warm body in here to take care of some of the things that are piling up on my desk," Frazier said.

Frazier, who took office in August, said he has been working on restructuring a department that administers a $16 million budget and 19 sports. He said he hopes to present his reorganization plan to the Board of Regents by the start of the year.

The board must approve any reorganization and change in pay scales.

Frazier said he expects to add "a couple of positions" to the existing administrative staff and would like to have two or more associate ADs with newly defined responsibilities when the restructuring is completed.

Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'o-hanohano, currently assistant athletic director and senior women's administrator, is targeted to become one of the associates under Frazier's plan. She is currently the only senior women's administrator in the 10-member Western Athletic Conference without an associate title.
