HPU wins, UHH loses in volleyball

Susy Garbelotti had 18 kills and 15 digs as Hawai'i Pacific swept host Montana State-Billings, 30-15, 30-27, 30-25, in women's volleyball yesterday.

Olivia Munro had 20 kills for the Yellowjackets in a match that did not count in the Pacific West Conference standings.

Hawai'i Pacific is 14-8 overall, 6-3 in the PacWest. Billings is 8-18 and 3-7.

In another match that did not count in PacWest standings, Western New Mexico beat visiting Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-23, 30-20, 30-24.

Tiffanie Ollison had 10 kills for the Vulcans (8-19, 3-8), and Courtney Martin had 10 kills for the Mustangs (20-13, 4-7).

St. Francis alum Kimberly Tano had eight kills, and Kahuku High graduate Malia Kalui had 30 assists for Western New Mexico.


SURFING

• Merle-Jones wins tour: Kaua'i's Jesse Merle-Jones won the Foster's Pro Surfing Tour after placing fourth in the final event, the Globe/Gallaz Pro, last weekend at Oceanside, Calif.

Merle-Jones earned $10,000 after amassing the most points in the 16 contests on the 2002 tour. All the events were held in North America, with 10 in California. The contests did not count toward surfing's World Championship Tour.

In the women's division, Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels placed second in the Globe/Gallaz Pro.


GOLF

• UH women in eighth: Tara Chappell shot a second-round par 72 as the University of Hawai'i women's team moved up from 12th place to eighth yesterday at the 15-team Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout in Henderson, Nev.

Hawai'i has a two-day total of 632. New Mexico leads with 589.
